‘Columbarium’ option could ease space issues in cemeteries

Sligo County Council is investigating the possibility of having a special area in Sligo Cemetery for the ashes of people who are cremated.

The resting area would resemble a wall and is known as a columbarium.

It would have about 20 compartments, or niches, in which urns could be placed.

News of the development emerged at yesterday’s annual budget meeting of Sligo County Council, at which councillors again outlined their concerns over the increasingly urgent need for more land for burial grounds in various areas throughout the county.

Council Director of Services Tom Kilfeather said the council will initially get a costing for providing the facility in Sligo Cemetery.

And he says the idea may be extended to other burial grounds.

He told Ocean FM of the advanages of a columbarium.
