Rural Ireland needs to be made more appealing

Rural Ireland needs to be made more appealing for people to live in once again.

That’s the view of Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny.

With up to 300 post offices nationwide threatened with closure the Sligo/Leitrim TD says it highlights the slow death of Rural Ireland.

One of those post offices is in Ballygawley, Co. Sligo where a public rally and meeting in recent days has attracted hundreds of people in support of keeping the service in the village.

There are 1,150 post offices employing almost 4,000 people in Ireland.

According to deputy Kenny too many services are being moved away to banks and online when the government should be extending them in the post office network.

He told Ocean FM if the post office network was utilised properly it could revive rural areas.
