Sligo/Leitrim TD calls for review to address pension pay gap

A Sligo/Leitrim TD has called for a review of the state pension to address the gap in pension pay between men and women.

Fianna Fail’s Eamon Scanlon says the current state pension affects women’s ability to qualify for the state pension.

Currently only 16% of women qualify for the full pension.

Deputy Scanlon told the Dail the gender pay gap is much more pronounced at pension age with men receiving an average of 37% more.

Time taken out of the workforce by women to care for children is time lost paying into a pension and this is unfair according to deputy Scanlon.

He says a contributory based pension puts them at a disadvantage.
