2017 League of Ireland season to kick-off on February 24

The SSE Airtricity League will kick off earlier next year, with the FAI confirming a start date Friday, February 24.

The FAI have also announced that because of the fixture congestion suffered by all clubs towards the end of last season that the 2017 mid-season break will be one week shorter, and the FAI Cup will only have replays from the quarter-finals onwards.

The Premier and First Division seasons will run from February through to October before the cup final takes place on Sunday, November 5 at the Aviva Stadium.

The mid-season break will run from Saturday, June 3, until Thursday, June 15.

The fixture list for next season will be released next month.

Meanwhile, the first U15 National League will kick off in August, while the start dates for the U19 and U17 Leagues will be announced later.

Sligo Rovers have appointed former captain Conor O’Grady to take charge of their U15 team along with Marcel Gordon and Paul Masterson.

O’Grady told Ocean FM he is looking forward to taking on the role…
