Department says it cannot comment on hunger striker in Sligo



The Department of Justice says it cannot comment on the case of a man on hunger strike in Globe House in Sligo.

An Iraqi man has been on hunger strike for over a month now in protest at plans by the government to deport him.

In a statement to Ocean FM yesterday evening, the Department said ‘it does not comment on any particular individual who is in the protection process’ saying the State has ‘a solemn obligation’ to protect their identity.

It goes on to say providing any such information could lead to individuals being inadvertently identified which would result in the State being in breach of its obligations.

A rally in support of the man takes place outside Globe House this evening at half six.
