Councillor says north west can’t attract mental health staff

A Fianna Fail councillor in Sligo says the region is finding it difficult to secure qualified consultant psychiatrists.

Ballymote councillor Keith Henry says more attractive benefits in the private health sector and other parts of the world mean mental health service users in the north west are suffering.

The 2006 vision for change policy promised to deliver mental health services into the community but without funding and qualified staff people are having to travel to access the care needed.

Councillor Henry told Ocean FM that new and increased funding promised to Mental Health services has not been forthcoming:

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein TD for Donegal Pearse Doherty says mental health services which are under severe pressure also find it hard to recruit new staff.
