Irish Rail responds to Harkin’s concerns on overcrowding

Iarnrod Eireann has today responded to complaints about crowding on one of the Dublin/Sligo trains last Friday afternoon.

MEP Marian Harkin, who was on the 1pm train from Dublin, described the level of overcrowding on the train as ‘unsafe.’

However, Barry Kenny, of Iarnrod Eireann, told Ocean FM today that now is the busiest time of the year for the rail company.

According to North West MEp Marian Harkin, many passengers who had to stand on the 1pm train from Dublin last Friday afternoon thought they might have got seats when people got off at Maynooth.

However, because of the large number who got on in Maynooth, people had to remain standing for much longer, many of them between carriages.

Ms Harkin described the situation as having been ‘unsafe’ and she told Ocean FM News she did not use that description lightly.

This morning, Iarnrod Eireann spokesman Barry Kenny apologised to people who had to stand.

However, Marian Harkin asks why extra carriages or an extra train cannot be put on at this busy time.
