Irish Rail: Sligo incident shows motorists taking chances at level crossing

Irish Rail is warning people to be aware of the dangers of both manual and automatic level crossings.

There was one category one incident at a level crossing in Collooney in Sligo in 2015 along with four other near misses and a barrier collision.

Category one incidents are where the driver of the train has to apply the brake to prevent a collission.

Figures released by the RSA show that there were 89 incidents at level crossings across the country in 2015 with a large number at user operated crossings.

Barry Kenny from Iarnroid Eireann told Ocean FM of the dangers for drivers at level crossings.
