Three-quarters of people in mortgage arrears not showing up in court

Three quarters of people involved in mortgage arrears cases in court in Sligo this month either did not turn up for their cases or were not represented.

But the Money Advice and Budgeting Service says that in these circumstances, people are at risk of losing their homes.

In Sligo, such cases are dealt with before the County Registrar’s court on the second Wednesday of every month.

And MABS says they are there to help.
Yesterday, at the County Registrar’s court in Sligo, 39 cases were listed.

Twenty-five of these were as a result of lenders seeking possession of properties on which money is owed.

On this occasion, none of the possession applications were granted.

However, three-quarters of people involved in these mortgage cases were either not in court or were not represented.

Joe Nevin, money advice coordinator with Sligo Money Advice and Budgeting Service, says this month’s court was not the worst.

But he says lenders seeking possession of family homes is now common.

Mr Nevin says there’s always a very human story behind these cases.

But he emphasises help is available.
