Historic win for young Sligo Pony Club rider in Punchestown

A young Sligo rider became the county’s first ever winner of the annual U12 triathlon event at the Irish Pony Club Minimus Championships in Punchestown last weekend.

Hugo Filan from the Sligo Pony Club scored top points in the event which featured 450 competitors from all over the country and saw the young riders clear a number of hurdles on a cross country course, before completing a 1,000 metre sprint run and a two-minute sprint swimming challenge.

Hugo is a son of Liam Filan and a nephew of singer Shane Filan, both accomplished horse riders themselves.

A special celebration will be held in the Clarion this coming Friday to mark the achievement.

The Sligo team, which consisted of Hugo and Ellie Filan, as well as Emily Conlon and Shane Donoghue, finished 22nd overall.

A second team of Brian Donoghue, William Foody and Marcus Mone also took part in the U12 championship, and, in total, Sligo Pony Club had 12 members competing across the weekend in Punchestown.
