An award winning human rights worker and International Chair of Friends of the Earth is set to visit Co. Leitrim this evening.

Nnimmo Bassey will attend a meeting in Manorhamilton to voice his opposition to extracting shale gas for what he is saying is the dangerous process of hydraulic fracturing or fracking.

Two gas companies have been granted licences to explore for natural gas in the Lough Allen basin which covers parts of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

Mr. Bassey is best known for his organisation's work to oppose Shell's activities in Nigeria.

The meeting will take place in The Bee Park Centre at 8pm.
