One in five homes tested in Sligo were found to have high levels of cancer-causing radon gas.
In Sligo, 67 tests for radon gas were completed in homes between 1st June 2011 and 31st December 2011.
Of these, 14 were above the acceptable level of gas according to figures released today by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland.
Figures show that one home in the county was 13 times above the safe level of gas.
Radon is the second biggest cause of lung cancer after smoking and is directly linked to up to 200 lung cancer deaths each year.
